It’s tempting to include as much fish as possible in your diet: they’re a great source of vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids and low in calories and saturated fats.
But a steady diet of fish is a bad idea if you’re eating farmed fish from your local grocery store.
The conditions fish are farmed in leaves them full of toxic methylmercury, viruses, bacteria and PCBs (chemicals used in transformers and gas pipelines). Always request fresh wild fish.
Even ignoring the toxicity: farmed salmon are fattier than wild salmon because they’re fed much more meal and oil.
Keep your eye out for environmentally friendly brands, like RainCoast. They ensure that their products are wild and regularly test them to ensure that they’re low in mercury.
